💛 JAM WITH A PURPOSE

This year, Big G Jam will help raise funds for the Hannibal Backpack Program, which provides meals to local kids when school isn’t in session. We’re still shaping the details—but know your good time is supporting a great cause.

🎤 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: BEN CHILBERT of DOPAMINE MACHINE

We caught up with the man behind the psychedelic prog-funk beast that is Dopamine Machine—Ben Chilbert (of Pickle Mafia, Haewa, and beyond).

1. Alright Ben — what exactly is Dopamine Machine and how did it come to life?

Ben: Dopamine Machine is the idea that we as people can tap into the super power of unlimited happiness and pleasure with the right mindset. It represents the flow state achieved when we allow ourselves to live in the present moment. And if I recall correctly, an ex-lover used to call me the "dopamine machine" when I was on hot streaks in life.

2. If Dopamine Machine were a cocktail or a video game, what would it be?

Ben: Both. Imagine drinking a Long Island Iced Tea while playing Super Smash Bros and Diablo at the same time on a Major League Gaming level 💪

3. How does this project scratch a different itch than Pickle Mafia?

Ben: This leans more into my psychedelic funk and prog roots. DM is like an evolved form of the music I made in Haewa, plus some obscure influences I’ve picked up along the way.

4. What's your favorite part about building this sound? The basslines? The chaos? The drops?

Ben: A lot of it starts with production. I love making beats on Ableton and destroying samples. The ideas come from that process and we turn them into live band material by working backwards.

5. What genres or artists secretly influence your writing for this band? Any guilty pleasures?

Ben: My Discover Weekly playlist, SNES music, Goose, Joe Walsh, Thundercat, anime, Polyphia. Everything’s a guilty pleasure if it’s real. 🌹

6. What should people expect from your Big G Jam set? And what should they definitely not expect?

Ben: Expect nothing and gain everything.

7. Do you have a go-to moment in the set where everything just explodes?

Ben: We try to climax in every song. The goal is to explode multiple times a show—individually and as a group.
